Throwing Experience

Have you ever wanted to try throwing on the potter’s wheel? Perhaps you’d like to give someone special the opportunity to explore their creativity in a pottery class? You’ve come to the right place.

About the Experience
During this two-hour throwing experience you will learn to centre, open out the clay, pull up walls, and remove the pot from the bat. The sessions are friendly, informal and perfect for beginners. Each session starts with a demonstration where I’ll talk through each stage, after which it’s your turn. Individual tuition will be given throughout as well as reminders about the various processes, to ensure you get the most from your experience. Don’t worry, I’m really patient and genuinely love helping others discover the joy of clay!

At the end you will choose your favourite two pieces to be fired and glazed. You will have the opportunity to choose which glaze you’d like your pots finished in from a selection at the studio. Your pots will then be ready to collect from the studio around 3 weeks later or alternatively, they can be posted out to you for a small cost.

You can expect to make a small bowl or dish, for jewellery or coins for example, a plant or pen pot, or maybe even a small vase. Please note we won’t be able to attach handles during this session.

Included in the price;
Clay, use of tools, materials and equipment on the day, apron and towel, glaze and two firings for your two favourite pieces.

Accessibility
Please note the studio is upstairs.

FAQs

I’ve never used clay before, can I still give throwing a go?

Absolutely! The 2 hour experience is designed for complete beginners. We all have to start somewhere and I’ve got many years of both throwing and teaching experience so you’re in good hands.

What do I need to bring with me?

Just yourself. It’s a good idea to wear clothes which are easily washed as it can be a messy process. However an apron and towel will be provided and if you do go home wearing some clay, rest assured it washes out.

I’m not ‘arty’ or creative, will I still be able to do it?

Probably the question I get asked most and the answer, as always, is a definite yes! Throwing is very adaptable, you can be as practical or creative as you fancy.

I’ve done some throwing before, is this suitable for me?

This experience is most suited to complete beginners or those who are fairly new to throwing. For more experienced potters, I offer individual tuition. Please get in touch to discuss the options available.
